PlanGraphics Assists District of Columbia with Mobile Inventory Management Application WASHINGTON, Jan. 20, 2004PlanGraphics Inc. (OTC BB: PGRA) has collaborated with the District of Columbia to create a tree inventory maintenance application that the District's Urban Forestry Administration staff will use to maintain tree data such as species, condition and disease-control efforts on mobile computing devices. PlanGraphics provided project coordination and technical development services to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) and a team of District personnel and various contractors. "This project will become a model for other urban forestry entities throughout the United States," according to Joshua Jack, who was PlanGraphics' project manager. "UFA has empowered its staff and has delivered GIS to all employees in an easy-to-use package." The application is part of the Tree Management System implemented at DDOT/UFA to address the need to maintain data about the District's street trees. The system consists of a service request and work-order system from Azteca Systems Inc. and GIS tools from ESRI. The work-order system and the GIS share a common geodatabase, which PlanGraphics created and populated. PlanGraphics assisted the UFA in implementing ESRI's ArcGIS. The GIS tools range from ArcPad for field editing to ArcView and SDE for data maintenance and management. PlanGraphics developed a set of custom tools for ArcView and ArcPad to help non-GIS personnel in using the GIS. Using disconnected editing, users "check-out" a portion of the geodatabase. Edits are then tracked and updated in the geodatabase at the end of every day. Field staff can use iPAQs, tablet PCs or laptops for field editing. The application is not dependent on a specific hardware or operating system, making the application readily scaleable with the growth of the tree inventory. PlanGraphics, founded in 1979, is a full life-cycle systems integration and implementation firm providing a broad range of services in the design and implementation of information technology in the public and commercial sectors. PlanGraphics' experience with spatial information systems and e-services capabilities provides a critical discriminator among other IT consulting and integration firms. PlanGraphics has headquarters in Frankfort, Kentucky, and regional offices in Maryland, Colorado, California, Rhode Island and New York.
