FAQ
FAQs about
PlanGraphics and Xmarc
Q: Does
the fact that PlanGraphics has acquired the rights to Xmarc technology
mean that PlanGraphics will no longer maintain its traditional stance
of independence toward GIS software vendors?
A: Having
access to a set of integration tools does not make PlanGraphics
any less independent than our use of Oracle Forms or Oracle Spatial.
PlanGraphics does not intend to compete in the GIS software market.
PlanGraphics will use the Xmarc products as integration tools to
develop solutions for clients' multi-platform data and applications.
Q: Why
is this tool set important to PlanGraphics' systems integration
practice?
A: The
traditional GIS products do not have the enterprise "penetration"
that Netscape or Explorer doand the Xmarc tool set will allow
us to build solutions that rely on the data sets built with, maintained,
and used by the traditional GIS suppliers and push this data to
more users within the enterprise. As a result, we believe more individuals
(and organizational units) will become familiar with the value of
spatial data and will likely become the next customers for the traditional
GIS suppliers.
Q: What
does PlanGraphics' acquisition of Xmarc's intellectual property
mean for the future development of Xmarc products?
A: Though
Xmarc Ltd. in Europe will continue to develop the technology and
we will collaborate in deciding what functionality is required,
PlanGraphics holds the source code for Xmarc products.
Q: What
is Xmarc's future technology direction?
A: Look
for a users/VAR conference in the late spring, where future directions
will be discussed (and your input solicited). As far as specific
products, Fire 5.0 is now in beta testing. New licensees have a
choice of 4.5 or 5.0. Current customers (who are current on their
maintenance contracts) will received Fire 5.0 later in the spring.
Q: Where
do I go for Xmarc technology or related services?
A: If
you are located in North America, you should contact PlanGraphics.
Q: I
have an existing agreement with Xmarc. Who is responsible for it?
A: Xmarc,
Inc., no longer operates in North America. You may choose to contact
PlanGraphics and explore how we can support your needs into the
future.
Q: I
wish to acquire new Xmarc licenses. Who do I contact?
A: PlanGraphics
can provide additional licenses to customers in North America, as
well as renewals to maintenance agreements.
Q: Whom
do I contact for further information about any of this?
A: Contact
